Imagine being able to contribute to a social project every time you make a purchase. Just a few cents. Anytime.
Something as simple as rounding up the final amount of your purchase and making a micro-donation to a social or environmental impact project. It is called rounding up, and it is possible. “I like to round up whenever I can because it is a very convenient and safe way to contribute. For most people, rounding up is not a big deal, but when you see the final results, you realize that all those cents together have helped finance huge projects,” says one customer who rounds up the cost of her purchases whenever she has the chance.
“Round up your purchase is a charitable action where you can donate a few cents at the end of each purchase to different NGOs,” says Sara García, store manager at Muy Mucho in Majadahonda (Madrid). This initiative was introduced by Muy Mucho four years ago and has since raised approximately €120,000 for social projects. This year, they are partnering with Save the Children to raise money to combat bullying, a problem that affects one in 10 children.
“Campaigns like the one Muy Mucho is running help make issues like bullying more visible and raise awareness of the urgent need to address these challenges,” says Claudia Bogdanov, Head of Strategic Partnerships at Save the Children.
This partnership was made possible by Worldcoo, a free online tool created in 2012 for e-commerce platforms to contribute to social and cooperative projects. In 2017, it began operating in the offline world. “After several years of developing and implementing micro-donation channels in the online world, especially in digital sales stores, we realized that the system works, that people like it, and that they use it on a regular basis. So, we decided to make the leap into physical stores,” says Anna Moragas, Head of Communications and Public Relations at Worldcoo.
Thanks to Worldcoo’s simple and transparent technology, customers who wish to can contribute to different social causes with a simple click. This way, many small donations can help raise larger amounts of money to generate a greater positive impact. “So far, we have channelled more than 65 million micro-donations worldwide, thanks to which has allowed us to finance nearly 800 social and environmental projects that have benefited more than 2.5 million people,” says Moragas.
In 2023, Glovo acquired Worldcoo with the goal of driving the company’s growth and making a positive impact by bringing rounding-up technology closer to Glovo’s 200,000+ partners. In the long term, Glovo wants to incorporate this technology directly into the app and raise 120 million euros every year for different NGOs by 2030.
